Wheel Bearing Repair in Altamonte Springs

Wheel Bearing Diagnosis and Replacement

A wheel bearing lets each wheel spin smoothly while carrying the full weight of your vehicle. When one starts to wear, it usually announces itself with a hum or growl that many drivers mistake for tire noise. At Zych’s Certified Auto, our ASE-certified technicians pinpoint which bearing is failing and replace it before it becomes a safety problem.

Most newer vehicles use a sealed hub assembly that bolts on, while others use a bearing pressed into the steering knuckle. Many hubs also hold the wheel speed sensor for your ABS. We road test the car to hear how the noise changes with speed and turning, check each wheel for play, and scan for any related ABS codes before recommending a repair.

What Our Wheel Bearing Service Covers

  • Road test to isolate bearing noise from tire and drivetrain noise
  • Wheel play and roughness check with the vehicle raised
  • Hub assembly replacement
  • Pressed-in wheel bearing replacement
  • Wheel seal replacement on serviceable bearings
  • ABS wheel speed sensor check on hubs with built-in sensors
  • Axle nut and hub bolt torque to factory specs

Signs of a Bad Wheel Bearing

Bearing noise usually starts faint and grows over weeks or months. Watch for these signs: See also our CV axle repair and ABS component repair services.

  • Humming or growling that gets louder as speed increases
  • Noise that changes when you change lanes or take a curve
  • Grinding or roaring from one corner of the car
  • Steering wheel vibration that grows with speed
  • Loose or wandering feel in the steering
  • ABS light on along with a bearing noise

Florida Water and Heat Versus Wheel Bearings

A wheel bearing depends on its seal to keep grease in and water out. Here in Central Florida, that seal gets tested often. Summer afternoon storms and hurricane season leave standing water on roads around Altamonte Springs and Apopka, and driving through it puts the hubs underwater. Over time, water can work past the seal and break down the grease inside.

Heat adds stress, too. Bearings sit right next to the brakes, and stop-and-go traffic on SR 436 and US 17-92 sends a lot of braking heat into the hub. Long highway runs on I-4 then keep the bearing spinning at speed, which is often when a worn one starts to hum.

What Wears Out Bearings in Central Florida

  • Flooded roads: water pushed past the seal mixes with grease, and a contaminated bearing starts to pit and get noisy.
  • Braking heat: constant stops on busy corridors heat the hub and can cook the bearing grease over time.
  • Rough roads: potholes and construction-zone road edges deliver hard impacts that can damage the bearing surfaces.

Our tip: if a humming noise gets louder when you drift into a curve one way and quieter the other way, mention that when you call, because it helps us narrow down which bearing is failing.

Wheel Bearings FAQs

Both can hum, which is why a road test matters. Bearing noise usually changes when the car’s weight shifts in turns, while tire noise tends to change with the road surface. Checking the wheels for play and roughness confirms it.
A noisy bearing will keep getting worse, and heat builds as it wears. In severe cases it can get loose enough to affect steering or braking. It is best to have it checked as soon as you notice the noise.
Yes. On many vehicles the wheel speed sensor is built into the hub assembly, and a worn bearing can disrupt its signal. Replacing the hub often fixes both the noise and the warning light.
Not always. Bearings wear based on the conditions at each wheel, so we replace the one that has failed. If the bearing on the other side is also showing wear, we will let you know.
